Terry Brown's "Are We Too Dependent on Technology"?

The article I have chosen to critique is Terry Brown's article titled "Are We Too Dependent on Technology". Terry Brown is an experienced product management and marketing professional that worked for technology based companies for over 30 years. It is a well-made article with lots of references and good article overall. This is my critique about the article and what made it good for me.

The content

The thing I liked about the article is that he used the mixture of facts and logic and personal opinion about the topic. By providing facts and logic, he solidified his argument and stance about a specific sub-topic. One example is in the sub-topic "Are There Business Costs of Being Too Dependent on Technology?" where he provided a statistical data after giving his argument. This made his argument stronger and it made a lot of sense as to why he thinks that way in that sub-topic. The same can be said with the other sub-topics. He gives his argument first and reference a study later. The reason I liked that he used his personal opinion in the argument is because the article became so much relatable. By giving his own personal experiences or the things he observed, the article became timely and friendly to readers because they can relate. Obviously, just giving your own personal experiences is not always credible since, everyone have their own experiences and that is where the references will come into play. Terry Brown's article made good use of these things and that is what made his article enjoyable and convincing.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I do not think that Terry Brown's article made an argument that I disagree with. By using both facts and opinions, he made a convincing article that makes a lot of sense. It was a really good article and I like it a lot objectively as well as, subjectively. If you want to read his article, click this. I highly recommend that you read it if you have the time. It is informative and it is an eye opener especially for people that you think is always relying on technology.

A Rhetorical Analysis of President Marcos' Sona

      First SONA of President Marcos

On July 22, 2022, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered his first State of the Nation Address or SONA, at the Session Hall of the House of Representatives, Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City. He discussed his agenda during his term as the President of the Philippines as well as, firing a long list of populist policies as his administration’s priorities for the next 12 months. His speech lasted for over an hour and in this blog post, I will try my best to discuss what rhetorical appeals he used.

Rhetorical Statements

Immediately after greeting everyone present in the room and to the people watching, he used the rhetorical appeal called Pathos in the statement "We live in difficult times brought about by some forces of our own making, but certainly, also by forces that are beyond our control.". By sympathizing to everyone about the current problems we are facing, he is appealing to our emotions. It is a good approach since he is not just blaming the mistakes of the people but also, other factors leading to the current situation we are facing alleviating the guilt of the people.

He also used the rhetorical appeal called Logos in the statement "The initial revenue impact will be around Php 11.7 billion in 2023 alone.". This appeal to logic by providing statistics and facts strengthened his claims and proposals. It shows that the projects he intends to do is attainable and realistic making it effective against the people who think that he is just saying bogus things to gather peoples' support.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the first SONA of President Marcos was a success. By using the combination of Pathos and Logos, he is appealing to the masses not just with human emotions but also, with facts, statistics, and logic to strengthen his arguments. Not using ethos is a smart move because it shows that he is communicating with the other government agencies with their respective expertise. This shows the importance of having a balance rhetorical appeal in order to persuade different kinds of people in this chaotic world. Having the best of both worlds is not always bad and greedy. It sometimes, paves the way for more room in communicating.

What it feels like to read

What it feels like to read:

When I first saw this meme, I laughed for at least a minute straight. It was so relatable and accurate I basically ascended from the mortal realm. This encapsulates how it feels to read textbooks especially for people like me who does not like the wall of text in front of them with small fonts. It really sucks to read without a visual representation of the events or characters and the book feels so bland. In this article, I will discuss my personal opinion about reading in general.

Whose fault is it?

The main reason why non-readers gets bored of reading even when the author is describing every single detail about a certain scenario is the lack of imagination. They simply cannot imagine the narrative the author wants to convey, either because they are too lazy to think about it or they do not understand the vocabularies well. Do we really have the obvious answer? Is it really the reader's fault that they do not enjoy reading?

It is complicated like a beautifully written novel or book

I am fully aware that I went for the 'please everyone' route by saying that it is both the author and reader's fault but, it is unfair to justify one side if both are at fault. It is the author's fault when the narrative of the story is complicated. This is a common situation especially when a book or a novel gets a sequel or a prequel. Some details about the characters and events happened in the first book gets contradicted by the second book. Sometimes, it results in a beautiful mess and sometimes, it becomes an entangled disaster. It is also the author's fault when they use complicated words or sentence structure, instead of a simple and concise sentence that their target audience can understand. Of course, the readers are also at fault here if they cannot be bothered to search for the word they do not understand. It is the reader's responsibility to understand and critically read the text to fully enjoy the world the authors made.

Conclusion

In conclusion, reading takes a lot of time to full appreciate it. If you have the time to critically read a text, book, or novel and have the imagination, I say go for it. It is important to not be peer pressured and do something you do not want. Remember to be yourself but, be flexible enough to respond to situations without being rude and losing your identity. I hope this blog made you smile and thought about what is reading in your life. Be good people and have a nice day!
